" I have to realize that I’m not always going to be there, especially at high school, to step in and wave the autism flag."

Thank you for this. Needed to be reminded of this!

I have spent hours reading your blogs, and learning so much through them. My grandson, Brayton will turn 11 soon, and I'm finding it to be a great deal different than from the 2 yrs. to present stage of dealing with his autism. Brayton is HF and always a precious person. It's just that I need to learn all I can as he starts 5th grade and in preparing him for jr. high after that. Thank goodness for one more yr. of elem. school. I've been working on stepping back for several mos. now. Your blogs are very informative and I shall continue observing them. Thank you!

That is terrific. I, too, often try to 'help out' people in understanding Kaeden. But, the truth of the matter is, they have to figure out this social game and the best means of doing so is trying. We are so lucky our boys have the tools to even try. And letting them do it, well, it makes us that much stronger, and in the long-term our kids that much stronger. Way to go, Mr. VP...I'm glad he really did get it and gave Nigel another something to look forward to.

Wow, hope it goes as well. High school starts early there - 8th grade is part of high school?
I personally dont think 8th graders are mature enough for high school....at least....the ones *I* went to school with certainly weren't!
Junior high is the worst time of , well, many people's lives, mine no exception.
But hopefully it will go better for him! Esp. with a VP like that :)

These are the moments that I just love... how great for him--and for you!

Incidentally, I've been doing the very same thing for Nick--taking a step back (or a great big pause and wait..) and it's worked well..

And high school for Nick next year too--yikes!
