M, with your suggestion of having TVs in various rooms, you just gave me another idea for distraction. Nigel's always asking me to look up stuff on Wikipedia for him. I'll keep a running list, and the next time he goes into meltdown mode, I'll suggest we look something up on Wikipedia! It would serve as both a distraction and a reward for stopping the meltdown. It's so crazy it just might work . . .

very intense, i'm glad this ended well.

maybe you can set up numerous little TVs in strategic locations throughout the house, with dinosaur dvds in them, so that if he's upset, you can just hit a button and have a nice distraction. er. maybe not. i don't think i have the tanya gift for practical thinking.

Wow. And good tips. I do agree that life can get easier as autistic kids get older--but sometimes there can be explosive moments and scary ones too because they are so much older and bigger. I hope Nigel was okay even after the dinosaur program...

It reminded me of Nick's obsession with dinosaurs when he was younger… always a great distraction. Even the woman at the bookstore would have books on dinosaurs laid out for him when we showed up there--he loved them.

I also have two cats and can certainly understand that two is the limit!! But don't show me a cute little kitten--big trouble!!
